A Neighborhood Older Than the County
This is arguably the oldest settled ground in Broward — Mary Brickell bought the land in 1874, and the neighborhood took its name from the hammock of trees along the New River and from James Louis Colee, the engineer who camped here while building the Intracoastal. That history survives at Colee Hammock Park on Brickell Drive: one shaded acre of old oaks, benches, and river views at a bend of the New River. Since the city opened all of its parks to leashed dogs (6-foot leash, waste bags mandatory), it's become the neighborhood's best low-key training spot — enough squirrels, riverboats, and passersby to matter, calm enough to succeed.
Our lesson route writes itself: start under the canopy where your dog can win, then work west along the residential blocks between Broward Boulevard and the Tarpon River bend, and finish where the neighborhood empties onto Las Olas — heeling past patio tables, holding a sit while a scooter rips by, ignoring the well-dressed doodle across the street. Distance from distraction is the dial, and Colee Hammock lets us turn it one block at a time.
